On April 17, China's first self-developed CVT continuously variable transmission successfully went offline at Chery. Since then, Chery has become the only independent brand automobile company in China that fully grasps the four key technologies of car chassis, engine, automatic transmission, and engine management system (EMS). The history that China cannot develop and produce automatic transmissions with independent intellectual property rights is over. The offline production of domestic CVTs is yet another major breakthrough in the Chinese auto industry's core components and has made the Chinese auto industry a step closer to becoming a car powerhouse.
Because CVT can realize the continuous change of the transmission ratio, it has the characteristics of smooth and smooth transmission, wide range of working speed ratio, easy to form an ideal match with the engine, and improves the fuel economy and power of the vehicle. However, high-end automatic transmission technology has always been controlled by multinational corporations. Due to the high price of imported CVTs, self-owned brand cars are generally not used. Many models only supply manual transmissions, which has become a bottleneck in the expansion of product lines of independent brands. Zhu Xinchao, general manager of Chery Precision Machinery Co., Ltd., which is in charge of the project, told the reporter that as early as 2003, Chery launched a project to independently develop CVT. After years of efforts, it has realized key links in product design, processing technology, assembly technology, and testing. A series of breakthroughs were reported and received dozens of patents. Through the optimization of the joint control, self-adaptation and closed-loop control functions with the independently developed engine, it is ensured that the CVT has stable performance, low consumption and high efficiency during its use. Chery also established its own independent CVT gearbox evaluation system through independent research and development and formulated 19 special test standards to fill the gap in the domestic automatic transmission test specification.
It is reported that Chery's CVT CVT has an annual production capacity of 50,000 units in the first phase and 150,000 units in the second phase. The CVT19 continuously variable transmission that is off the assembly line is Chery’s first continuously variable transmission with international advanced level developed by Chery. Its maximum input torque reaches 190Nm, and it can match the 1.6-2.0L mainstream displacement range of the engine. Chery models equipped with CVT are expected to be listed during the year.
Yin Tongyue, chairman and general manager of Chery, stated at the off-line ceremony that as a strategic product project of Chery, the successful offline production of the high-end automatic transmission and the Chery series of equipment will significantly reduce the cost of Chery's automatic transmission models and increase Chery's product competitiveness has far-reaching significance for Chery’s product structure adjustment and upgrade and market competitiveness.
Yin Tongyue also told reporters that Chery’s 6AT transmission will also go offline within the year and will be fitted to Chery’s high-end models, while the 1.3L model will be equipped with AMT transmissions. At present, the proportion of automatic transmission products sold by Chery does not exceed 10% of all models sold. After the completion of the automatic transmission base, Yin Tongyue hopes that the proportion of automatic transmission models sold will reach 40%.
At the off-line ceremony, Director of Industry Department of the National Development and Reform Commission Li Gang started the CVT production line, relevant leaders of the National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, experts of Tsinghua University, Hefei University of Technology, Chongqing University of Technology, Guangzhou Automobile Group, Changan Automobile and Jianghuai Automobile. Special guests such as leaders and leaders attended the off-line ceremony and unveiled Chery’s first batch of CVTs.
