US titanium dioxide producer will greet the light

Affected by the global economic downturn, the US titanium dioxide market has been weak for about a year. However, recently, the construction industry in the major downstream areas of titanium dioxide has shown signs of recovery. Titanium dioxide producers expect that the downward trend of the market will come to an end. Market demand growth may push prices to rebound early next year, but it is still in the low season of traditional demand. Before the end of the year, the titanium dioxide market will remain weak.

Peter Huntsman, CEO of Huntsman, a major US titanium dioxide producer, recently said: “We believe that the downstream manufacturers will complete the inventory cleanup by the end of the fourth quarter of this year, and demand will increase steadily in the first half of 2013.” DuPont Lockwood also believes that demand for titanium dioxide will increase as the real estate market recovers in key downstream consumer sectors such as paints and coatings. The American Real Estate Developers Association said in its recently released semi-annual housing demand forecast that new housing starts in 2012 will increase by nearly 22% from 2011. In addition, Karen Fletcher, Vice President of Investor Relations at DuPont, said that the European economy will stabilize and China will invest more in infrastructure in the future, all of which will promote the US titanium dioxide market. Due to promising industry outlook, DuPont will continue to invest in the titanium dioxide business investment plan, which is expected to be implemented by the end of 2014 or early 2015, including the addition of a 200,000-ton/year production line at the Altamira plant in Mexico. The 150,000-ton/year plant in Mexico and China Taiwan will be upgraded.

An architectural coatings manufacturer expects its demand for titanium dioxide to increase by about 10% next year, inventory is no longer high, and prices will continue to rise. Prior to this, due to the typical off-season seasonal demand, inventory clearance will continue. Other titanium dioxide users said that they will not implement any plans to purchase titanium dioxide until the end of this year, waiting for prices to fall further, so that next year they can produce coatings at a lower cost. According to the convention, the major paint manufacturer in the United States, Sherwin-Williams, also said that in the fourth quarter, the operating rate will be reduced to reduce production. Sherwin-Williams CEO Christopher Conner emphasized that titanium dioxide producers and buyers must endure price declines for a while.

At the same time, under the influence of the concept of cost reduction and efficiency enhancement, many manufacturers are actively looking for low-cost alternative technologies, such as the use of low-cost sulfated titanium dioxide in the primer. Huntsman also said: "In the past two years, all increased production capacity has been using the sulfuric acid process, and no one customer is willing to spend more money to purchase chlorinated titanium dioxide." Some downstream users are also upgrading processes to reduce the amount of titanium dioxide. A paint manufacturer stated that due to the change in formula and improved raw material use efficiency, the company will reduce its purchase of titanium dioxide by 15% to 20% next spring. Therefore, the short-term titanium dioxide price is difficult to reproduce the past glory.

Cement Grinding Aid

Cement additives are materials added to cement for the optimization of the cement properties and the cement grinding process. Cement additives are classified into different product groups such as grinding aids, strength enhancers and performance enhancers.
Grinding aids are used in order to reduce the electrostatic forces between cement particles and their agglomeration. Grinding aids most commonly consist of ethanolamines such as triethanolamine (TEA) and triisopropanolamine (TIPA) along with glycols such as diethylene glycol (DEG) and propylene glycol (PG).
