Toyota step ahead

In this contest, whoever leads the next industry revolution is the big winner in the auto industry.

For example, Nissan and Renault have pledged to invest US$5 billion in R&D and production of electric vehicles and batteries; Toyota, however, has taken another road: spent more than US$10 billion in research and development of hybrid vehicles in the past 16 years, and Established and nurtured an ever-expanding market. In the past year, Toyota expanded its hybrid model to 12, including four different models of the third-generation Prius. In 2012, Toyota sold a total of 327,413 hybrid vehicles in the United States and 1.2 million vehicles worldwide. The global ownership is close to 5 million vehicles.

Among all the hybrid vehicles, the Prius accounted for more than half of the share, becoming the most successful "green car" in history, and the few exceptions to the so-called green car that the public sniffed.

Compared with the Prius, the Leaf can only be considered so-so.

Nissan introduced the Leaf two years ago, and has sold less than 50,000 vehicles worldwide so far, and in January it drastically reduced its minimum price to US$29,650. According to TrueCar's survey, even some Nissan dealers have reduced Leaf's monthly rent from 1999 to US$199.

For now, Ghosn’s 2009 forecast seems to be a bit out of reach. He had boldly predicted that by 2020, electric vehicles will occupy 10% of the entire automotive market, reaching 6 million vehicles per year or more.

However, increasingly stringent fuel efficiency standards will begin to be implemented globally by 2020. Automakers have to reevaluate their strategies, including the application of more advanced technologies. Yamashita of Nissan even said, "If you don't make electric cars, I'm afraid that is unlikely to reach that standard."

Even so, severe market competition and consumer demand for electric vehicles still force Nissan to tilt more resources toward hybrid vehicles. In December last year, the company announced that Nissan will launch 15 hybrid vehicles worldwide by 2017.

At the same time, Ghosn said: "We will still vigorously promote electric vehicles, but we are businessmen and pragmatists. We will also develop and produce hybrid vehicles because there are both market and consumer demand.

Last September, Toyota gave up its plans to produce thousands of electric vehicles. The previous electric car project was also reduced to only 100 small electric vehicles.

Two Japanese automakers have cooperated with other companies to develop hydrogen-powered vehicles. Toyota just announced its cooperation with BMW last week, while Nissan is working with Daimler and Ford.

Despite spending heavily on battery technology and electric vehicles, even the most optimistic fans of electric cars have a slight worry about its future.

"We will not regret it," Yamashita said in a commentary on Nissan’s tens of billions of dollars in betting on electric vehicles. “Maybe it will be many years later. No, we should not regret it.”
