China's successful development of alternative natural rubber "isoprene rubber"

Recently, the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” national science and technology support plan undertaken by Jilin Province, “C5 Comprehensive Utilization – Isoprene Rubber Production Technology Development” project was approved by the expert group organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

It is understood that, with the rapid development of China's automobile industry, China has become the world's largest natural rubber consumer and importer, dependence on imports of natural rubber reached 80%, natural rubber shortage has become a constraint China's rubber industry, the automotive industry and even One of the important resources for the development of the entire national economy urgently requires alternative products to be brought to the market. Therefore, the development of isoprene rubber production technology is one of the effective ways to solve the shortage of natural rubber resources in China. By replacing natural rubber with a 50% share of tire production, the replacement of isoprene rubber will reach 1.1 million tons/year, which will have very large market and economic benefits.

The project of “Carbon 5 Comprehensive Utilization—Development of Isoprene Rubber Production Technology” was jointly undertaken by Changchun Yinghua Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and PetroChina Jilin Petrochemical Company. It was mainly developed to promote the comprehensive utilization of China's carbon 5 resources and alleviate the shortage of natural rubber in China. The 10,000-ton-grade rare earth isoprene rubber production technology provides advanced process technology for the formation of large-scale production capacity of isoprene rubber and comprehensive utilization of carbon 5 resources. The project team developed six homogeneous rare earth catalyst systems, designed and built a complete 20L continuous and 1m3 batch solution polymerization test device, optimized the basic formula and tire formulation for domestic isoprene rubber products, and developed rare earth elements. Epoxy rubber can replace natural rubber by 40% without changing the tire manufacturing formula and processing technology. Trial tire products passed the certification of the National Rubber Tire Quality Supervision and Inspection Center. The project applied for a total of 27 patents, including 3 US patent applications, 2 U.S. patent grants, and 13 Chinese patent grants. It also drafted a national technical standard for rare earth isoprene rubber and 2 enterprise standards.
