Eco-friendly sports car: extraordinary charm, speed, strong power, never emit CO2
Rinspeed and Bayer MaterialScience team up to create a transparent concept car "eXasis"

Zumikon / Leverkusen - Engine performance: 150 brake horsepower, maximum speed: 210 kilometers per hour, acceleration: 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 4.8 seconds. It sounds like driving fun, but it may be guilty about the environmental impact? You don't have to worry about it here.
Developed by Swiss automotive design company and Bayer MaterialScience, the Rinspeed "eXasis" concept car fully demonstrates the concept of driving pleasure and ecological environment. Thanks to the lightweight plastic construction of Makrolon® polycarbonate, the car weighs only 750 kg and is powered by a 750 ccm two-cylinder Weber engine. An average of 6.3 liters of bioethanol E85 (= 4.5 liters of gasoline) is consumed per 100 kilometers. Since ethanol is finally converted to CO2 neutral in the ecological balance, the CO2 emissions are only 20 grams (!) per 1 km of the car. E85 is a renewable biofuel that can be made from previously stored CO2, plant material, vegetables or agricultural waste that is emitted during combustion. For comparison purposes, a typical medium car emits about 200 grams of CO2 per 1 kilometer of travel.
“Automobiles must be lighter and lighter to reduce CO2 emissions, and only modern plastics can achieve this. Cars and the environment are considered inevitable. In contrast, cars must also bring fun, otherwise no one will buy them. Rinspeed Chairman Frank M. Rinderknecht and Bayer MaterialScience Director Ian Paterson all agree. Through the cooperation of the third concept car, the fully transparent eXasis, the two sides put together the common ideas and inspirations to create a dynamic yellow sports car.
In terms of power, eXasis uses a lightweight Weber driver. Urs Wenger of Weber development partner swissauto said: "We have abandoned the large-capacity engine and some of the cylinders, so the size of the eXasis propulsion system has been reduced to a minimum. Why do you do this? In this way, we can maintain a satisfactory low engine. Capacity, while maintaining a high-capacity high-capacity cylinder." In this way, the car is not only speedy but also more economical. Wenger said: "The car travels 1 kilometer and only emits 20 grams of CO2. This is the lowest level of car emissions I have heard." Compared to the typical large-scale engine sports car, it emits 300 grams of CO2 per environment for every kilometer.
This is also the main reason why some state-owned enterprises and government agencies participate in the eXasis project. The fuel was supplied by the Swiss Alcohol Board profit center Alcosuisse. The agency is responsible for the production and research of bioethanol in Switzerland. The Swiss Federal Energy Office has chosen eXasis as the subject of a study entitled “Light Buildings and Eco-Environment”. The choice is based on two main reasons: the energy efficiency of the lightweight structure of the car and the use of renewable energy. According to the Swiss Federal Energy Office, reducing vehicle weight is the most effective way to reduce fuel consumption.
The importance of weight loss for a car seems to be equivalent to its importance to humans. This is why Bayer MaterialScience has spent many years working on the design of innovative plastic body components. In addition to Makrolon® polycarbonate, eXasis also uses some polyurethane components to provide superior design freedom and cost savings.
In other applications, Bayer MaterialScience Polyurethanes also contribute significantly to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by saving heat. Rigid polyurethane foams have the highest thermal insulation properties of all traditional materials, and are used in a large number of applications in the insulation of food chains and in the insulation systems of buildings. In pipes, rigid polyurethane foam envelopes protect internal products from external temperatures.
