Just 10 days after SAIC-GM-Wuling deputy general manager Yuan Zhijun disclosed the third base construction plan, SAIC-GM-Wuling completed a formal signing agreement with Chongqing’s Liangjiang New District on November 28, announcing the construction of the SAIC-GM-Wuling’s third base in Chongqing. It is reported that after the Chongqing base is completed and put into operation in 2015, it will have a capacity of 400,000 vehicles and engines.
It is understood that after the new SAIC-GM-Wulings base was determined to be located in the central and western regions, Chongqing finally won the other two alternatives from Xi'an and Chengdu. When it comes to site selection considerations, Chen Hong, president of SAIC, stated that “as the population base and economic aggregate are huge in the central and western regions, the vehicle ownership is generally low and will become another driving force for the development of the Chinese auto industry. Chongqing has obvious regional advantages, strong radiation power, relatively complete industrial chain, and a considerable scale for the automotive industry."
Chongqing is not only an important production base of Chang'an. At the same time, Dongfeng, Beiqi and other companies are also building mini-vehicle production bases here. The automobile industry structure supporting more than 1,000 auto parts manufacturers has been formed. Moreover, the local government also gave policy support to the car, and had previously taken the lead in proposing a preferential policy for mini vehicles. According to the plan of Chongqing Municipality, by 2015, Chongqing will have an annual output of 3.5 million vehicles and an output value of 600 billion yuan.
Although SAIC-GM-Wuling did not disclose the specific product launch of the Chongqing base, it will focus on micro-vehicles from the analysis of capacity planning and location advantages. Since 2006, SAIC-GM-Wuling has occupied the No. 1 position in the mini vehicle market. Up to now, SAIC-GM-Wuling sales have reached 1.32 million units, and it is expected to exceed 1.4 million units throughout the year.
With the start of the construction of the third base next year, SAIC-GM-Wuling also completed the final 2 million capacity planning and layout of the “Twelfth Five-Year Planâ€. At present, SAIC-GM-Wuling Liuzhou Base has an annual production capacity of 800,000 vehicles; after the completion of the second expansion of the Qingdao Plant last year, the annual production capacity of the entire vehicle has increased to 500,000; on November 18, SAIC-GM-Wuling Baojun Base was officially completed. Put into production, 400,000 new production capacity.
