At 3 pm on March 29th, after more than six hours of rescue, three finless porpoises stranded in the waters of Lake Bupleurong in Poyang Lake District were rescued and released. They were about 1.5 meters long and weighed about 20 kilograms. This is a beautiful action to protect the finless porpoise in Poyang Lake.
At 4 o'clock on March 28th, Poyang Lake Fishery Administration Bureau received reports of the stranding of three finless porpoises and immediately organized technical staff of Fuyang and Duchang Fishery Administration Bureaus to escort them to the scene. At the same time, they asked the Wuhan Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences for help. In the early morning of the 29th, three experts from the Wuhan Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences rushed to Puyang County, where they met with technicians from Xiangyang and Duchang Fishery Bureau. Under the guidance of experts, fishery technicians successfully rescued.
The dolphins are commonly known as river pigs and are second class protected animals. In 1991, an expert from the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences organized an expert survey and believed that there were 2,500 finless porpoises in the Yangtze River. In the 2006 survey, the number of finless dolphins in the Yangtze River was about 1,200, and about 1300 were reduced in 15 years. In order to protect the Yangtze River finless porpoise, China has established seven finless porpoise reserves in the Yangtze River basin, and the Poyang Lake finless porpoise conservation area is a provincial-level protected area.
