Fu Wei, deputy director of the Technical Supervision Department of the Science and Technology Development Department of China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation, said that there are several obstacles that are difficult to overcome in methanol gasoline, such as low calorific value, insufficient power, certain corrosivity and swelling, etc. The hurdle is that methanol is a toxic substance and careless use can harm human health. Methanol is a hazardous chemical that is the focus of regulation. Inhalation or percutaneous absorption of a certain amount of methanol can cause blindness and death.
Michael Walsh, chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Clean Transportation Committee who attended the forum, said in an interview with this reporter that the United States has promoted methanol gasoline for some time, but in view of the toxicity of methanol gasoline, the use of methanol gasoline was eventually abolished.
Tang Dagang, director of the motor vehicle emission monitoring center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, also said that if methanol gasoline is used improperly, it could easily cause negative effects on health and the environment. Do not use methanol gasoline as much as possible. Methanol can be used for other things, but it does not have to be used in gasoline.
Fu Wei also questioned the society as the "green clean energy" for methanol gasoline. He said that compared with regular gasoline, the nitrogen oxide emissions of methanol gasoline increased, and its aldehyde emissions were about five times that of ordinary gasoline. “China's formaldehyde content in furniture is strictly controlled, but there are no restrictions on aldehyde emissions in the vehicle exhaust emission standards. If so many cars emit formaldehyde, what will be the consequences?†Fu Wei pointed out that at present internationally A life cycle assessment approach is commonly used to assess the impact of a product on the environment. The data shows that the carbon dioxide emitted during the production of methanol from coal is quite high. To produce one ton of methanol, 2 to 3 tons of carbon dioxide are emitted, and the water consumption is as high as 10 to 12 tons. “So, the methanol gasoline produced by blending methanol into gasoline is not a green clean energy at all.†Fu Wei said.
