Petrochemical Central Enterprises’ Outstanding Performance in Earthquake Relief

On May 21, Li Rongrong, director of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, briefed the media on the overall situation of the earthquake relief work of the central government and answered questions from reporters at a press conference organized by the National Office for Newcomers. Among the central SOEs managed by the SASAC, the central SOEs in the oil and chemical industry have performed well in terms of personnel assistance and the urgent deployment of material production in the disaster-stricken areas.
According to Li Rongrong, after the earthquake, the central enterprises of the petroleum and chemical industries, in addition to actively donating money and goods to the disaster-stricken areas, have also invested in earthquake relief for the first time.
In terms of personnel rescue, thousands of employees and their families trapped by the China Qingping Phosphorite Organization of the China Chemical Industry Corporation carried out self-rescue and mutual rescue, and dozens of miners trapped underground successfully escaped danger. China National Offshore Oil Corporation transferred 14 helicopters for offshore oil operations to the disaster area and put into relief work.
In the aspect of material supply, the central enterprises in the oil and chemical industries also worked overtime to organize production and made every effort to ensure the urgently needed material supply in the disaster-stricken areas. For example, China National Chemical Corporation has gone all out to work overtime to produce peracetic acid, sodium hypochlorite and other disinfection products. By May 19th, it had produced 127 tons of disinfectant to rush to the disaster area. At the same time, it also drove 100,000 medical gloves to support the disaster area.
In addition, companies such as China National Petroleum Corporation and China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation have taken various measures to ensure the supply of oil and gas in the disaster area. CNPC arranged the relevant enterprises to produce refined oil products at full capacity to support disaster relief, add 100,000 tons of refined oil products to Sichuan, and start the “green channel” for disaster relief and guarantee refueling at gas stations along Chengdu’s urban areas leading to Dujiangyan and Wenchuan. As of 1700 on the 18th, CNPC has restored the supply of oil products to the counties in the hardest-hit areas in Sichuan. Sinopec urgently transported 100,000 tons of refined oil to ensure uninterrupted oil supply for 24 hours and ensure the use of oil for rescue equipment. China Aviation Oil Group Corporation urgently transported oil products to the airport in the disaster-stricken area to meet the aviation fuel supply at the airports in the disaster-stricken areas.
It is also known that many central enterprises in the petroleum and chemical industries have subordinate enterprises or institutions in Sichuan and have thus been affected to varying degrees in this earthquake. Among them, China National Chemical Corporation suffered the most.
