Woodward looks at opportunities for gas engines in the Chinese market

As a long-term supplier and close partner of Shanghai Diesel Power, WOODWARD specializes in prime mover control and energy control business, and has a leading edge in the control of industrial engines, especially alternative fuel engines. A few days ago, in the gap between the Asia-Pacific Gas Vehicle Organization China Tour and the Shangchai Power Environmental Protection Trip held in Tianjin, the reporter interviewed Matt Taylor, Vice President of the Engine Division of Woodward and Mr. Yan Zhongzhong, General Manager of China.
Reporter: I heard that your company's gas engine control system has more than 50,000 units in the global market. What are the main customers?
Woodward: Woodward's gas engine control system (OH series) is mainly used in the medium- and heavy-duty vehicle market, accounting for 70% of the global market for heavy-duty (175-450 hp) gas engine control systems. International customers include Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Hyundai, Doosan, Mercedes-Benz, etc.; Chinese customers include Shangchai, Yuchai, Weichai, Xichai, Nanchong Diesel, etc., basically all domestic diesel The OEM is our customer.
Reporter: What do you think Woodward’s advantage in the Chinese market is?
Woodward: We have a mature engineering application team in China. We have an engine lab at our Suzhou plant. We can independently complete engine calibration, system training, technical support, and service. The local team can achieve rapid response. At the same time, there is a strong technology development team in the United States that can provide strong technical support to Chinese customers.
In the development process, we have a sound application management process (AMP) that provides standards for development and application to ensure system reliability and safety, and to achieve continuous system software upgrades to meet increasingly stringent emissions and Fuel economy requirements.
Reporter: Is it easier for natural gas engines to achieve emission levels above Euro V and Euro V than diesel engines?
Woodward: It is relatively easy for natural gas engines to achieve emission levels above Euro V and above that of diesel engines. Euro III and Euro IV are currently not a problem in China. Our major customers in China have reached Euro IV levels, and Foreign countries have reached the Euro V level. For natural gas engines to achieve emission levels above Euro V, an equivalent combustion control system is required, while EGR and aftertreatment devices are used.
Reporter: LNG (liquefied natural gas) vehicles have advantages in terms of fuel carrying and mileage, and are suitable for long-distance transportation. However, they still have problems in the accuracy of fuel injection. How does your company solve it?
Woodward: This problem does exist in practical applications, but it is more common in the Trim control system. The fundamental reason is that the pressure and temperature after gasification of LNG change greatly, and it is more difficult to control. A small change in the disc valve will cause a large change in the amount of gas input, leading to poor control accuracy. Our control system uses nozzle-controlled injection to accurately calculate the required gas flow and achieve accurate injection based on the actual temperature and pressure of the gas. At the same time, the system's self-learning compensation function further improves the control accuracy. Therefore, this problem has been well solved in our system.
Reporter: Your company has developed an equivalent combustion control system. Compared with lean combustion, how difficult is equivalent combustion?
Woodward: Compared to the lean combustion system, the equivalent combustion system is not difficult from a development point of view. The key is the engine body. Equivalent combustion requires that the engine system be redesigned, including the combustion chamber and the air intake system. The heat exhaust system has a relatively high exhaust temperature, which is a test for the engine body.
Reporter: In the past few years, a number of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) buses had problems in Guangzhou Public Transport. Are you loading your control system? What caused it?
