With the continuous development of China's own brand of trucks, many Chinese and foreign joint ventures and cooperation methods that have been regarded as a catalyst for development have gradually been abandoned by truck companies. Instead, they are taking the path of independent development to introduce key technologies. Major truck companies such as China National Heavy Duty Truck Group, Beiqi Foton Motor Co., and FAW Jiefang have all practiced this route, and they have been getting wider and wider.
Truck companies have introduced technology
The cooperation agreement signed by Sinotruk and Timoney Company stipulates that both parties will invest 100 million yuan to establish an independent suspension system production base. In addition to satisfying the requirements of China National Heavy Duty Truck, the products are also sold to Timani. At this point, China National Heavy Duty Truck will master the core technology of heavy-duty independent suspension.
Beiqi Foton naturally is not far behind. At the beginning of this year, the news that Futian and Mercedes-Benz cooperated for a long time finally came to an end. The two companies signed a strategic alliance agreement. Futian issued 229 million common shares of new shares to Dai-ke, and introduced Mercedes-Benz OM457 diesel engine technology to establish an engine plant to improve the power system of Auman Heavy Trucks. The agreement also stipulates that Auman Heavy Trucks can also sell through Dai-Ke's global distribution network. Earlier, Fukuda had established a joint venture with Cummins of the United States to establish a light engine manufacturing company. Futian and Cummins invested 2 billion yuan to produce diesel engines for direct-injection light vehicles. So far, Foton has worked with two major multinational companies to solve the key problem of lack of motivation for its own products.
In addition, FAW Jiefang and Shaanxi Automobile also did a lot of work on technology introduction. FAW has introduced Eaton Transmission, Deutz Engine and Nissan Axle Technology. Shaanxi Automobile and Man cooperated to introduce cab technology. The mainstream heavy truck companies have made significant progress in the performance and quality of self-owned trucks by introducing and applying a key technology to their own brand trucks.
MNC’s joint venture desires are almost defeated
Compared with the introduction of key technologies for self-owned trucks to develop themselves, it is difficult for multinational companies to cooperate with Chinese truck companies in the joint venture to produce their products.
As joint ventures and cooperation can enable transnational corporations to obtain greater benefits in China and have a firm grasp of core technologies, the expansion of multinational corporations in China is mainly carried out in a joint venture with Chinese auto companies to produce complete vehicles. However, in the truck industry, the efforts of multinational corporations to seek joint ventures and cooperation have never been smooth. Truck companies insist that the bottom line of the joint venture should be based on technical cooperation with multinational companies, but they are less interested in the joint venture to produce complete vehicles.
There have been rumors that Foton will jointly manufacture Mercedes-Benz heavy trucks with Mercedes-Benz. However, so far, the two companies did not produce joint ventures to produce complete vehicles. In the strategic alliance agreement between Foton and Mercedes-Benz, there is no joint venture to produce the contents of the vehicle. The core of the agreement is the introduction of key technologies.
“At present, mainstream truck companies have entered the fast-track of development. Joint ventures with multinational companies to produce whole vehicles are equivalent to giving the market to them. The impact on self-owned brand trucks is too great. The development of self-owned brands is even more difficult.” a truck company official told reporter. While recognizing this point, Chinese truck companies have also demonstrated that the desire of multinational companies to jointly produce their entire vehicle products in China will fail in 89 cases.
Technology introduction has been divided
“Chinese trucks have achieved remarkable results so far, but we have to admit that there is still a big gap between the technical level and stability of products and foreign products,” the truck company official admitted to the reporter.
It is precisely for the sake of narrowing the gap with foreign products that truck companies started to cooperate with multinational companies in key technologies. In the automotive industry in China, there are generally two types of cooperation: one is the joint venture production of the entire vehicle, and the other is the introduction of technology. “The lesson learned from the joint venture of a car company tells us that the joint venture with a multinational company to produce a complete vehicle will often result in the Chinese being controlled by people. Ultimately, what is the key is also not available. Therefore, the selective introduction is the basic way for us to cooperate with multinational companies. A person in Shaanxi Auto said.
According to reports, there are three main benefits of selectively introducing key technologies. The first is to substantially increase the technological content of the product; the second is to enable Chinese companies have a great deal of autonomy; the third is to enable companies to master core technologies in a relatively short period of time.
